Official Statement regarding Stevensson Funeral Directors

The Scottish Funeral Awards were created to reward and acknowledge good practice within the Scottish Funeral Industry and the individuals that show care and compassion for families.

We became aware of an ongoing situation with one of our Finalists and made the decision that until a conclusion was reached, we would make no further comment. The situation in regards to Stevenson Funeral Directors has now changed.

We were saddened to hear that an investigation was launched into Stevenson Funeral Directors in relation to financial misconduct. Stevenson Funeral Directors were awarded four awards in August of 2019. These awards were given after a blind judging process by a panel of independent industry specialists. At the point of Judging and the awards ceremony, there was no indication that financial misconduct was taking place.

We have taken steps to find out more information in regards to the allegations made towards Stevenson Funeral Directors, including speaking with Avalon Funeral Plans and the Police. We now feel at this time, we must act on the information that has been provided to us, and with charges having now being made, The Scottish Funeral Awards are removing the three company awards granted to Stevenson Funeral Directors- Best Funeral Director in the East, Best Independent Funeral Director and Scotland’s Best Funeral Director.

The award of Best Undertaker which was given to an employee of Stevenson Funeral Directors will still stand as this was given to an individual who is no longer associated with the company.

The Scottish Funeral Awards team will discuss at a later date the awards and how to move forward after what we can only imagine has been a very difficult time for all who have been affected. The Scottish Funeral Awards will make no further statements or comments in regards to this matter.
